Caterpillar RMC Competition Cycle

2023 Caterpillar RMC

In May 2023, Alabama Astrobotics stayed at home and competed in the 2023 Caterpillar RMC in the Lunar Surface Simulator (LSS). The team's rover, Trey, completed two 15-minute rounds in the limestone dust, ultimately collecting 8.1 kilograms of gravel.

MARTE 2023 Design Specifications

MARTE 2023, nicknamed Trey, was designed and built from scratch to collect and offload icy regolith buried beneath the surface of the Lunar South Pole.
Key Elements of Trey's Design:
  • An offloading bucket with wire mesh to efficiently sift and dump the icy regolith.
  • A trencher excavation design that tears through over a foot of limestone dust to collect icy regolith.
  • A chain driven drivetrain to maximize torque.
