Outreach Events 2022 - 2023

​The Alabama Astrobotics Team participates in many outreach events each cycle. Events range from on campus demonstrations to elementary school visits, with the aim to inspire students to be involved and interested in STEM activities and careers.  We are always looking for new outreach opportunities!

Get on Board Day

Get on Board Day is a bi-annual event for student activities on UA's campus to recruit new members. This event reaches thousands of diverse students who attend UA and are looking for ways to get involved at college.

Space Days

The University of Alabama Space Days is an annual event that brings together industry leaders in space exploration and student groups on campus who share a love of Space. Alabama Astrobotics presented to interested students along with industry leaders on our work as a team. 

Worlds of Work

Alabama Astrobotics ran a table showcasing work in space robotics at Shelton State Community College located right here in Tuscaloosa, AL for Worlds of Work (WoW). WoW is a career expo that brings numerous industry leaders and education partners together to showcase opportunities and careers to schools in the area.

Fort Payne FIRST Qualifiers and Championship

This year the Alabama Astrobotics team volunteered at the FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Lego League Competitions held at Fort Payne. The team members served as judges, game referees, robot inspectors, field resetters, and other logistical positions.

Holy Spirit Catholic School

The Alabama Astrobotics team worked closely this year with Holy Spirit Catholic School to help them prepare for the BEST Robotics competition. Our members assisted with CAD modeling of their robot, as well as general design principles.

Several of our team members spoke to around 75 students between the 9th and 12th grade at Northridge High School about career opportunities in STEM and robotics, as well as opportunities in higher education. Check out the presentation that was given to the students above!

Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School

Our software team taught basic programming to Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School to help them get their robot for the Shelton State BEST Robotics Competition operational. They were recognized as the "Top ranking middle school in the Robotics competition" in the South's BEST 2022 Competition.

Walker Elementary School

Several of our team members spoke to nearly 300 students between the 3rd and the 5th grade at Walker Elementary School to promote interest in and answer questions about space robotics.

E-Day

 Alabama Astrobotics ran a table at E-Day, an open house event that provides high school sophomores through seniors (10th-12th grade) the chance to learn more about majors and career opportunities available in engineering and computer science.

STEM Showcase

Members of the Alabama Astrobotics team attended the STEM Showcase held on the university's campus. Middle school students competing in the STEM Showcase visited the team's table to talk about the team and get up close and personal with our previous year's robot, Goby.

Science Olympiad

Hosted jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, the annual, state-level Science Olympiad gives K-12 students the chance to complete in STEM competitions. Members of the Alabama Astrobotics team ran two events at the competition, "Bridge" and "Storm the Castle".

Alabama Robotics Competition

The Alabama Robotics Competition is an event where students write programs that navigate their robot across a series of obstacle courses. The Alabama Astrobotics team ran a table showcasing our robot from last year, Goby, for K-12 students to spark interest in the field of space robotics.

Al's Pals

Students from the University's partnership program Al's Pals visited the Astrobotics lab as part of their STEM engagement program. Al's Pals encourages education of all forms for elementary school children in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama Astrobotics Lab Tours

Each year, Alabama Astrobotics welcomes visitors from across the country to visit our lab on the University's campus. We ask each visitor to place a blue sticker on the map to mark their hometown. Each red sticker on the map marks our team members' hometowns.
